2 - Why they can't they see what I see?

Um...am I the only one to notice that people seem very, er, distracted, lately? Pretty much everyone who's come into the store seems to be looking for something to distract them, but, with the amount of books people keep dropping, it seems like they're distracted enough already.

I know that it's, you know, getting steadily harder for society as a whole to keep focus, that people are developing gradually shorter attention spans...but, um, am I really the only one not seeing this?

Sorry if this comes off a bit strong. Um...it's been a long day.

1 - I will find the time, to find the words

Um...hello.

I'm Billy.

There's, uh, not really much else to say about me. I like books. I own a bookstore, actually. Maybe you've heard of it? You probably haven't, actually. It's the little used one, Bad Horse Books. It's kind of hidden...and, um, dusty.

You might also know my brother, James. Of course...you may not. Um.

I'm kind of new at this.

For Harmony: Character Profile

Photobucket

Name: Billy Buddy
Fandom: Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog
Age: 26
PB: Neil Patrick Harris
Job: Owner of a small used bookstore in town.

Sexual Orientation: He’s very shy, around anyone, and more concerned with romance than sex. But, he’s pretty much heterosexual.

Appearance: Billy has the general appearance of a person who doesn’t really want to be noticed. He’s handsome, with dark blond hair, and expressive blue eyes, but does not, in any way see himself as attractive. He tends to wear baggy, dark, oversized clothes which disguise a thin, but muscular frame. H

Personality: Billy is extremely intelligent. He is a gifted engineer, and a talented scientist, but is plagued by an extreme lack of confidence. If distracted, he can still manage to pull off some fairly impressive technical feats, thought most aren’t as successful as he would probably like. When focused, however, he can become dangerously productive. He has the ability to create just about anything when only concentrating on that one thing, and has been known to shut himself inside for days on end doing nothing but work.
He is not a man with an active personal life. Social interaction is by no means his strong point. He’s always been shy, but as he’s gotten older he’s withdrawn into himself more and more to the point where he only seems to leave his apartment to do laundry. He will speak when he has to, but only when absolutely necessary, and it will be extremely hard for him. He is by no means afraid of people, or of interaction, he simply lacks the confidence and the will to attempt to do it properly. He is, however, frequently nervous and very anxious around people. When forced to speak to others, he will usually give the impression that he would like to run away as fast as possible.
Hidden underneath the extreme shyness and utter lack of social skills, however, lies a bitter, angry person. Billy has very strong and radical beliefs about the world around him. He is highly cynical and is somewhat of an anarchist. He sees the system as corrupt, and humanity as painfully ignorant of this. He desperately wants the world to wake up to see the lies he believes are surrounding them, but lacks the confidence to speak up. The potential is there, he is an intelligent, capable person, he is simply too shy to completely unlock all that he can accomplish.

Despite his pessimism and misanthropy, however, Billy is somewhat of a hopeless romantic. Prone to develop deep crushes on people, he will watch from afar but rarely approach. He is a believer in love at first sight, but having been on the wrong side of unrequited love far too many times, he acknowledges that it rarely works out. Romance is probably the one thing he really is optimistic about. Despite his inability to act upon his own romantic desires, he continues to hope that it could happen. As poor as his attitude towards humanity is, it does not stop him from falling in love. His awareness of this contradiction in his beliefs is an occasional struggle for him, but for the most part, he has come to the conclusion that love makes no sense and therefore can’t compliment any set of ideals, let alone his.

History: It’s always the quiet ones, isn’t it?

Billy grew up in the suburbs of Los Angeles. He was born to rather unimpressive parents who never really quite understood him. They were nice, just…distant. He was smarter than them, more clever, more intelligent, and very much aware of it. He was often bullied as a child, and in fact, he was often bullied as an adult. He was an only child and a natural introvert. It was a combination of this bullying and loneliness that colored his opinion of humanity, and as he grew older, he gradually became more cynical and pessimistic about the world. Always somewhat of a radical at heart, he began to make serious plans for how he wanted the world to be run, and how he could get the world to that point. It was around this time that he started considering villainy.

He had already decided that heroes were ridiculous. A superhero was nothing more than a corporate tool used to distract the masses from the real problems of the world. It was the villains that brought true reality and change. Naturally, this appealed to Billy much more, and so, after moving himself to Hollywood and converting his apartment into a moderately well-hidden laboratory, he took his first steps towards becoming a super villain. Using the name “Dr. Horrible” he began committing various illegal acts just to upset the established order. He began building things, creating weapons and devices he’d had in mind for years but never had the freedom to try to create. Things were going well, and aside from the fact that he seemed to get regularly beat up by the establishment’s excuse for a hero, Captain Hammer, he was enjoying villainy. He began planning to apply to the Evil League of Evil, and after a while, it seemed nothing was going to be able to stop him.

That is, until he met Penny.

From the moment he saw her, he knew he was in love with her. She was at the Laundromat every Wednesday and Saturday, and though he was never able to summon the confidence to actually speak to her, he was there every Wednesday and Saturday to watch her. She was a distraction, it was difficult to work on projects when he had to take a break twice a week to do a chore he could potentially invent something to do for him, but he loved it. He loved her. Which naturally made things a bit complicated when he accidentally introduced her to his arch nemesis and the two of them began dating.

At first, he accepted this grudgingly, attempting to be a friend to Penny in the real world while secretly planning to take down her boyfriend. He was once again rejected from the Evil League of Evil, unless he could go against his naturally passive nature and kill someone, and where once everything seemed great, everything seemed to be crashing down around him. This changed when Captain Hammer revealed his true motivation for dating Penny, that it was purely because Billy wanted her. It was here that he stopped being passive. Now, Billy had a target, a victim., and with that, he locked himself in his lab and obsessively began creating a death ray.

The day he finally got the chance to use it, however, something…well, horrible happened. (lol, see what I did there?) Despite freezing Captain Hammer with his freeze ray and having a clear shot of the superhero, Billy hesitated, and was thrown to the ground when the freeze ray wore off. Things seemed hopeless until Captain Hammer picked up the now malfunctioning death ray and tried to fire it at Billy. Captain Hammer went flying backwards, humiliated and crying like a baby. The death ray exploded, people screamed in terror, people scattered, and for a moment, everything was working out perfectly.

Until he saw Penny. A piece from the death ray had lodged it’s way into her stomach, slowly killing her. Billy was forced to watch as the woman he loved, and by association any last hint of goodness inside him, slowly died away in front of him.

Ironically, because he had technically, inadvertently killed someone, he was admitted into the Evil League of Evil, but with no Penny, the world seemed to lose its meaning, and Billy went from a well-intentioned extremist to a truly evil human being.

In-Game History: In-game, his life is not quite as harrowing. Once again, Billy was born unusually intelligent to two fairly normal parents in the suburbs. He excelled in pretty much every subject, and was often bullied for his homework. He stayed away from sports teams, and most extracurriculars – though he did join a book club for a bit - and usually stayed by himself. He graduated a year early from Harmony High, attended Harmony University, and eventually graduated with honors. When he was 23, his father died, a year later, his mother followed. Both passed peacefully in their sleep, and though he misses them, it had no horribly scaring impact on him.

He currently owns Bad Horse Books, a small used book store specializing in hard to find books. He’s gotten used to being alone over the years, and so lives alone in an apartment above the shop. He reads a lot, and is highly cynical of the world around him.
